Alice Night is a singer-songwriter who creates an alchemical mix of music, storytelling and performance. Her powerful and haunting voice, courageously honest stage-presence, and bold and poetic lyrics have won her attention since her debut in 2013.
Night's 2016 single At The Corner received a strong response from Unearthed and landed spotplay on Triple J. Unearthed's Dave Ruby Howe commented that “the tone to Alice Night's voice is just irresistible”, and announcer Gen Fricker remarked that she was “impressed by the depth of storytelling and musicianship”. At The Corner went on to be highly commended at the 2017 QLD music awards.
Alice Night's first album, Culture How Could You? was the result of a creative collaboration with ARIA-nominated and APRA-award-winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology). It was launched at Brisbane's Judith Wright Centre in April 2016, and supported by an east coast tour culminating in a performance at the MONA Gallery in Tasmania. The album received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with the blog Music is My Muse enthusing that “fans of Bjork, Lorde and Ladyhawke will adore this enchanting debut.”
Night's newest release is a 7-track collection, titled Remember, featuring collaborations with electronic producer Chris Townend, keyboard player Simon Mavin, and the mysteriously pseudonymed (for contractual reasons) "Centaur".
This release signals what promises to be an incredibly prolific 12 months, with two new albums in preparation. One is an album of experimental electronica written and recorded with Chris Townend and Simon Mavin. The other is a new collection of Night's more folk-oriented songs.
Alice Night represents a wave of bold, conscious contemporary artists who are unafraid to question the status quo. In addition to producing music she is a budding playwright (Night's play The Terrarium was shortlisted in this year's Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award) and poet (her first poetry anthology, Molten, has just been published).
“The tone to Alice Night's voice is just irresistible.”
